Are You Doing Business or Busyness?

I often hear individuals comment on how busy, overcommitted and overwhelmed they feel in their personal and professional lives. They rarely feel happy, successful and accomplished. They also have little or no time for themselves or to spend quality time with the important people in their lives. Fun, friends, family, rest, renewal and relaxation are only for those who are truly fortunate and blessed and they do not count themselves among them. It made me think about how much time individuals spend doing business and how much time they spend doing busyness in their personal and professional lives.

Doing business is being present, positive, proactive, prepared and  productive.                      Doing busyness is being absent, negative, reactive, unprepared and unproductive.

Doing business is when you set five goals each and every day and accomplish all of them. Doing busyness is when you set five goals every few days and accomplish none of them.

Doing business is attracting and pursuing opportunities that result in success.                  Doing busyness is avoiding and sabotaging opportunities that result in failure.

Doing business is being generous, thoughtful, committed and hardworking.                    Doing busyness is being selfish, thoughtless, non-committal and pretending to work.

Doing business is making it all about others, exceeding expectations and being memorable.  Doing busyness is making it all about you, not meeting expectations and being forgettable.

Doing business is choosing to conserve time, energy and money – yours and others.              Doing busyness is choosing to waste time, energy and money – yours and others.

Doing business is when you are ready, you take action and you always deliver on time.  Doing busyness is when you procrastinate, you do nothing and you never deliver on time.

So as you are planning your hour, your day and your week, make a commitment to spend increasingly more of your time doing business and increasing less of your time doing busyness. Within a short time, you will find that you will be one of those fortunate and blessed individuals who spend a considerable amount of time on fun, friends, family, rest, renewal and relaxation.

Send me an e-mail and let me know how doing more business has meant more happiness and success in your personal and professional life.
