The Five “Downs” That Can Change Your Life

This is the second in a series of four posts that focus on positive, powerful and productive preposition phrases.

Slow Down – Want to feel less tired, stressed and overwhelmed? Want to make fewer missteps and mistakes? Want to stop wasting precious time and feeling rushed and pressured? There are many benefits to slowing down: increased calm, comfort, confidence and creativity as well as accuracy, attention, awareness and accomplishment. 

Sit Down – Commit one day to sitting down as much as possible. If you are eating a meal or a snack, talking on the phone or having a conversation, do it sitting down. The benefits of eating sitting down are that you eat slower, chew your food well and savour the smell, taste and texture of the food. The benefits of sitting down when you are talking on the phone are that you are less distracted and focus totally on what the person is saying on the other end. The benefits of sitting down when you have a conversation is that you are not addressing the top of the person’s head,  you are looking them straight in the eyes and you are able to gauge their reaction to what you are saying by their facial expressions and body language.  

Write Down – Choose three small and specific daily goals and type them into your tablet or smartphone or write them down on paper. Set a time limit for each goal. Some sample goals: get out of bed by 6: 20AM; complete 30-minute workout by 7:00AM; shower, dress and eat breakfast by 8:00AM.  Or they may be goals like bring my lunch instead of buying it; walk for 30 minutes at lunch time; leave work by 5PM. The benefit of writing down three simple goals and achieving them is whether you have an unforgettable day or a day that you would rather forget, you can feel good that you did something today.   

Pay Down – Take a good long look at your financial life. Do you have good debt, bad debt or no debt? Are you comfortable with money and how you are spending and saving it? Do you spend a lot of time worrying about money and what you owe and rather than enjoying your money and managing it well? Maybe it’s time to speak to a financial adviser or other professional, pay down your debt and take control of your financial life. As the song says,”Money Changes Everything”. The benefits of paying down debt is that you have   more money, choices and freedom as well as less debt, stress and worry.   

Pare down – Set aside some time to make a complete inventory of everything you own. You will probably find that you have stuff that you forgot that you acquired and have never used or things that you had stopped using and will start using again. Summer is a great time to clean out your bags, closets, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, drawers and bookshelves as well as your car, basement, garage or storage room. The benefits of having less stuff are feeling more relaxed, less burdened and the amazing feeling of sharing your abundance with others. Give away as much as you can and be more decisive and deliberate with your purchases and acquisitions.
