Justify A Joyful January

I hope that you had a joyful, abundant and restorative holiday season and a December to remember. January can often be a big letdown from the warmth, light and fun of the holidays. It is cold, dark and heavy with the pressure to make this year even better than the last year. You set New Year’s resolutions to be more productive, prosperous, happier, healthier, slimmer, stronger, organized, opportunistic.

What would it be like for you to take the joy of the holiday season and extend it into January. Here’s how you can justify a joyful January. Rather than set a whole bunch of New Year’s resolutions, set one simple goal that you will accomplish by the end of each day. If you have not set foot in a gym in at least a month, pick one day each week and go for one hour. If you want to get more organized, pick a day and organize one closet. If you want to lose some weight, pick one food that you have every day that you know is bad for you and pick one day each week when you will not have it. If you want to learn to relax, pick a day and go to a beginner yoga or meditation class. If you want to be a better writer, speaker, presenter, then pick a day and contact a friend or colleague who does this well and ask them how you might start improving. If you want to stay connected with family, friends, clients/customers and colleagues, set aside 30 minutes every day for an in person or telephone chat. Remember that you can justify your joy by setting simple goals and accomplishing them each and every day.

There is even more joy to be had in having fun be it planned or spontaneous. Take out your paper or electronic calendar and get a month at a glance. Start filling in each day with one simple goal or one fun activity. Make sure the fun activities outnumber the simple goals. You can also have a fun activity and a simple goal on the same day. Every day should have something in it. Use an abundance of creativity and a healthy self-interest when completing your calendar. Allow yourself to feel excited, energized, enthused and enlightened by all the simple goals and fun activities that you have planned for the month.

You can justify a joyful January with the right mix of simple goals and fun activities.  Include others in this project and show them how they too can justify a joyful January.
