Shift Gears To Drive Your Life, Career Or Business Forward

As the season soon changes from spring to summer or fall to winter depending on where you are in the world, take the opportunity to assess how things are going in your life, career or business. Then, decide if you want to set and achieve three goals to make positive and lasting changes in one of these areas. If you are interested, start by doing this two-step assessment. First, ask yourself: are you making slow and steady progress or are you feeling stuck and stagnant? You may be making slow and steady progress in your life yet you feel stuck and stagnant in your career or business or you may be feeling stuck and stagnant in your life but experiencing slow and steady progress in your career or business. Second, imagine that you are sitting in the driver’s seat driving your life, career or business in the same way that you sit in the driver’s seat of a car idling in city traffic, travelling on an open road in the sunshine or climbing a twisting mountain road with spectacular views.

In order to drive your life, career or business to the next level or destination, revisit the past, reflect in the present and reach for the future. Completing the exercise below with care, clarity and commitment will allow you to shift gears to drive your life, career or business forward.

Shift to Reverse  – Where You Have Been

Before you can move forward, it is a good idea to revisit where you have come from or what you have done in the past. If you have made mistakes or done things you regret, you want to ensure that there is no repeat of the past or that the past does not come back to haunt you. When you shift to reverse and back up, even with the benefit of mirrors and technology, you take a look over your shoulder to make sure that you can see where you are heading and that nothing is standing in your way. Backing up is rewinding the tape of your life, career or business. It may involve relearning lessons, reviewing situations or reconnecting with people.  Make note of any thing, person or situation that may prove helpful as you reflect on the present or reach for the future.

Shift to Neutral – Where You Are Now

This may be the most difficult part of the exercise to complete especially if you are feeling stuck and stagnant. You may feel like you are trapped, that you have no idea what you want and that things will never change for the better. If you have no idea or concept of what you want, try writing down what you dislike about where you are and what you least desire going forward. When you are sitting in neutral, you are moving neither forward nor backward. You can press pause, sit still and take as much time as you need for focused thinking and quiet reflection. Write a list of words or a group of sentences or find one or more photographs that accurately represent where you are in your life, career or business.

Shift to Drive – Where You Want To Be

When you are driving a car, you have an idea of where you want to go before you shift to drive. However, you may not know exactly how to get there so you have your car’s GPS or your smartphone providing you with detailed directions. Setting goals are the detailed directions that will take you to the next level or destination in your life, career or business. Set three goals that will allow you to reach for the future and move from feeling stuck and stagnant to making slow and steady progress. Ensure that the goals that you set are simple for you to achieve and that the results are sustainable.

So the next time that you are sitting in your car whether stopped in traffic or moving at your own comfortable speed down a wide open road on a beautiful sunny day, think about whether it is time to shift gears to drive your life, career or business forward. You may want to do this exercise again when the season changes again in three months or wait until December and do it to close an old year and open a new year.

Have a sensational summer or a wonderful winter!
