What Were Or Are Your Dream Jobs?

When you were a child or a teenager, you probably dreamed of being and working in a particular job or profession. Perhaps, your dream job or profession was the one that your father, mother or another relative who was a role model, someone you looked up to or with whom you had a close relationship was doing at that time. You may have made choices or decisions so that your dream came true, you now have that dream job or profession and you are hopefully still happily and successfully working and growing in it. However, there may be a dream job that is buried way in the back of your mind because you made other choices and decisions along the way that took you further and further away from it and made it more of a fantasy and less of a reality. Recently, I was out for lunch with two individuals whom I respect for their personal values and integrity and admire for their business success and acumen. The topic of our conversation turned to the question: “When you were a child, what was your dream job?” The answers were interesting and informative and allowed us to get to know each other better and talk about our values and our dreams. Incidentally both of these individuals have had their dreams come true as they are both happily and successfully pursuing their dream professions.

While you may be busy this month as some of your colleagues are on vacation, you may want to take some time to get your dream jobs or professions off the top shelf or out of the back of the closet of your mind, dust them off and explore if it is still possible to pursue one of them. If you are truly happy in your career or business then now may not be the ideal time to stop what you are doing and turn your attention away from where you are to exploring your dream job or profession or where you might want to be. However, if you are feeling unhappy, unfulfilled and unmotivated and even the summer warmth and sunshine is not putting a smile on your face or lightening your mood, perhaps this would be the ideal time to explore if it would be possible to make your childhood dream come true and pursue your dream job or profession.

You may be thinking: “I wouldn’t dare, I couldn’t possibly or I shouldn’t even…” because you are burdened with financial or other responsibilities. Putting these “wouldn’ts, couldn’ts or shouldn’ts” aside for a moment, even if you can’t leave where you are and make your whole dream come true by actively pursuing your dream job or profession, perhaps you can make your dream partly come true. You could live your dream by taking courses that pertain to your dream job or profession, doing an information interview with someone who is currently doing your dream job or profession and asking them if they would be willing to have you spend a few hours job shadowing them.

The individuals in your network in person or your virtual network on LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook could connect you with the individual who may be able to open the door a little or a lot and inspire and motivate you to take the leap and pursue your dream job or profession. Avoid letting this opportunity pass you by in July. If you can’t do it now, make it a must for August.
