Your days are fast paced, action packed and deadline driven with little or no time to stop, take a breath, sit down and spend the time to savour the smell, taste and texture of your food, listen to the tone and meaning of the words of someone significant or read every chapter and sentence or take notes on a book. Recently, I have read two books that have had a positive impact on my life and business. If you haven’t visited a library lately, you may want to take a few hours and leisurely browse the shelves. You will surely discover answers to questions, nuggets of wisdom and a treasure trove of ideas and knowledge.
The first book is a recently released book entitled Refire! Don’t Retire! Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life by Ken Blanchard and Morton Shaevitz who were seatmates on a plane and then after many conversations realized that there were the perfect team to write this book. Whether you are young or old, just starting out in your career, pondering retirement or already retired, this is a book that will inspire and motivate you to make changes in your life mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. If you are feeling stuck in a rut, this is the book that will get you unstuck and moving forward. One of the lessons of the book is how being more spontaneous can have a positive impact on your life and the lives of others. Yesterday, a friend called out of the blue and offered me an opportunity to put that lesson into practice. Before reading this book, I might have hesitated to accept her invitation to meet her on the spur of the moment for a shopping trip to one of her favourite stores that happens to be in my neighbourhood. However, reading this book made me realize that often the most spontaneous outings with friends can be the most fun and memorable. We ended up having a wonderful time.
The second book is JumpStart Your Leadership by John C. Maxwell, a 90-day improvement plan that should be required reading for everyone who wants to achieve success in their career or business. Whether you are contemplating a leadership position, are an emerging leader that has just taken on a leadership position or an established leader that has continually risen through the leadership ranks over many years, this book is a comprehensive primer or a welcome refresher on what is essential and important in today’s business environment to be a positive, impactful and successful leader leading supportive, collaborative and innovative teams. Each day provides powerful lessons and practical exercises that can be applied immediately in your role. Maxwell has written many useful and powerful books on leadership, however, this is one that you can carry with you in your bag, purse or briefcase and refer to it as required. I have given a copy of this book to many of my clients who are emerging and established leaders so that they can use it daily to grow and develop as leaders and share its wisdom with their teams and colleagues.
